Coming to KMC on Permissive TDY Orders - Can I drive?

I'm retiring from the active duty Air Force in 1 Feb 2017.  The exact same month, my wife, who is an AF GS is getting reassigned to Ramstein so I'll be accompanying her as a DoD dependent.

My question is this:  if I want to visit the KMC in December 2016 on a house-hunting trip in preparation for our move in Feb 2017, how am I going to get around to look at houses w/o a USAEUR driver's license?  Is there any provision that allows me to drive a rental car on my U.S. license while I'm there on permissive TDY or in terminal leave status (I'm still in active duty status until Feb 2017)?

Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

You are going to need your USAREUR license.  Study for, and take the test, as soon as you can.

Our sister site is the practice test site.   www.USAREURpracticeTest.com

If you are here on TDY you can rent a car with a US and an international license (from AAA for instance). In the past I was able to rent with just a US license. To be safe, I would still get the international license to accompany your US one.

You can not get a USAREUR license until you are actually stationed here in February.

True.  Guess I need to read better.  I somehow missed the TDY part.  Thanks for being on that, Bergman.  Good to see you here.

I finally changed my password to one I can remember.

Thanks, Bergman, for the update. You confirmed what I had been told by HQ USAFE.  I obtained an Int'l Driver's Permit from AAA the other day.

Thanks again.

My husband and I are in the same situation and we just arrived 2 weeks ago.  He was able to drive a rental car with the international driver's permit.  However, when we bought a car, he could drive the car only if I was in the vehicle with him as the sponsor.  Once we got the permanent registration (they can't help you if the car has temp tags), we were able to get a letter/form from US Customs on base that authorizes him to drive without me being in the car.  He just had to show his passport, international driver's permit and ID.  Hope this helps.
