Recommendations for German Elementary Schools

My husband will be working on Sembach. We are thinking about sending our soon to be 1st grader and 3rd grader to a German school instead of a DOD school. (Primarily for the immersion experience and just to have another schooling experience in general--different from an American based school.) Does anyone have any experience sending their kids to German schools and if so which ones are preferred in the general Sembach area? Thanks much!

Clara -

I just asked a friend of mine in Germany, to take a look at your question. Hopefully he'll be around to answer, soon.

Unfortunately it's getting harder for Americans to enroll their children into a German school due to the influx of refugees. German children are the first priority of course. You would have the best chance of getting your child/ren into a school in a smaller village away from all the Americans. Keep in mind the German school system is totally different than the American system as well, especially when it comes to children with special needs and other learning issues. (Not sure if that's a factor in your situation.) You can always put your children into a local soccer club/youth activity program in your village in order for the kids to get the "cultural immersion". (NOTE: Our daughter was accepted into the German system when she was three. She has gone on to the attend one of the most prestigious universities in the world..The University of Heidelberg...and is now attending the University of Dusseldorf.) It's a great system but also a very different system.
