some observations

Having just arrived I wanted to mention a few things...

TDYHomes: simply the best, wouldnt go with anyone else, super accommodating, helpful, no need to look anywhere else.

Airport Runner: Much cheaper than the rest of the services and super good people, I think a small family run business, trying hard to build up and really helpful, highly recommend. I paid 50E from FRA to Landstuhl

Roku box: I originally set my box up on a US internet and registered it with a US address etc...and I hooked it up here and it works fine without an VPN or anything else. I am assuming this is because it was previously set up on US.

Trash: learning recycling rules might be as hard as the drivers test!

Pets: I had no huge issues bringing my cats BUT I would suggest getting original copies of all paperwork...the airline insisted I surrender my originals which I tried to get out of but they wouldnt proceed without taking them, then when I arrive in Frankfurt some problems finding one original which I had to get the German Vet sign off on based on the copy...it all worked out but next time would just ask my Vet to sign 2 originals, one for the airline/cages and one for me to carry.

that is all for now, this site is super helpful!

SheralynZ,

How does the Roku unit work? I will be livign on the economy and wonder if I should purchase one before I leave the U.S...along with a HULU subscription. My wife does a lot of TV watching.

Also...I just noticed that there is a new (12/29/2014) 7 page veterinary certificate http://www.aphis.usda.gov/regulations/vs/iregs/animals/downloads/ge_bil_non_com_movement_pet14.pdf
) for international travel to Germany with less than 5 pets. It requires endorsement by the Regional VS office of each state.

Did you have to complete this form for your cat? I have three.

yes the 7 page form needs to be completed, you can put all 3 cats on the same form....make sure you have original rabies certificates and your health certificate should ideally be filled out by an Army Vet....otherwise you should get the health certificate sent to the USDA to be embossed....and then of course dont forget about the rules about the microchip....thats already been written about.....either have the vet fill out 2 original copies or dont give them up to airline, they vet place at frankfurt requires the originals...........TV, i cant get Hulu through my roku because of being overseas but everything else on there works....i would recommend ustvnow.com though, i love it, you can DVR everything, i play it through my roku with no problems...

Great Info - Thanks SheralynZ! I just got off the phone with the regional APHIS office in Frankfurt, KY, which is 100 miles away. They told me that from the time the vet signs the form to the time I travel, the form cannot b emore than 10 days old. That's really a compressed timeframe!

yes 10 days, its not a lot of time!

How long did it take you to inprocess at Landstuhl? I will be assigned to LRMC and was wondering how liberal they are on allowing you to inprocess and take the time required (or if I'm going to need to burn leave). I am a DA Civilian (GS).

i am sure this depends on your supervisor, mine was super fabulous and allowed me a few weeks to get everything done....it takes A LOT of time...no joke, so much running around and going from one place to another trying to get everything done, relying on other people to drive you....best thing you can do is study for drivers test and be ready to take the class and test the week you arrive, at least that way you can rent a car and get around yourself at least to and from work....probably they will still need to take you around since you wont know your way and most of theplaces you need to go to, housing officed, CPAC etc are on different campuses! its not really convenient at all....if you need any help or recommendations let me know, I am lucky I had co-workers who were really nice and helpful! I hope you have a good sponsor but if not there are usually nice people willing to help....Im happy to answer any questions etc

OPLAW, another option is to have the vet at Fort Knox do the paperwork. I fly back to KY later this month to get my dog and bring him to Germany. I called Fort Knox and made an appointment no problem. Easier than going t o Frankfurt, I've done that too.

Thanks, kyhoods! I'm definately going to look into that. The Fort Knox Vet is only about 10 minutes from my front-door.

You should not be using leave for "PCS actions". I hope your supervisor knows this because it really gets things started on the wrong foot when a supervisor tries to get you to use leave to take care of things like house hunting, registering your car etc.

When my wife moved here that was the case. Day one they had her come in at 0900 because that's when HR comes in. Later that day she left at 1500 to go look at a house. Her supervisor tried to get a leave slip...based on that very first day the climate was set. She had to go to HR and have them explain the purpose of admin leave versus annual leave.

The flip side of that was my supervisor, who said, "Welcome! See you in two weeks after you are done in-processing."

Can you get netflix and amazon through the ROKU? I'm heading back to the US next week. If this works I'll buy a ROKU and set it up while I'm there.

Do you have to use a VPN? Or can you just plug it in and watch US stuff, like Amazon and Netflix?

Yes and no. To get full functionality you'll need a VPN or DNS. I use unlocator.com for 4 bucks a month.
