Kindergeld

Anyone have any experience with Americans and kindergeld? I know several Americans that get it for their kids and they don't work on the economy. From what I've read on the internet I cannot determine if we would really be eligible? We will be paying taxes on the home we are buying but not German income tax. Any guidance would be appreciated. I've read horror stories about folks having to pay years worth back, not sure if these are true but shure wouldn't want to be in that boat.

I just found a good "official" answer to my question on www.EUR.army.mil. just google how to apply for German Kindergeld. Looks like my spouse or I would need to work on the economy and pay into the social security system which is allowable under the SOFA Status.
