Places that take a VAT form.

Last weekend we went out to the outlet mall. We tried to use a VAT form at Tom Tailor...no go. They knew exactly what it was but would not take it. They don't have to - got it - but it might be cool to get a list going of places where you've had success using a VAT form.

Globus
Real
Saturn
Media Market
Hornbach
Ikea
VW -Rittersbacher and Gebert (take your own oil)
Atelco (computer stuff)
Mobil Martin
Kaefer's (near Hahn Airport)

Earbyte - I wonder how far they will go back?? Wait, maybe I bought that kitchen faucet direct??

I think you would have to call for that one. Longest I have ever seen is 1 year, but I have not asked very many stores. I usually collect receipts of places I shop often and take one vat form before the time limit runs out. Saves.

You'll need a vat form that predates the purchase.

This is very true, and an important fact. If you are going to save the receipts, or use a form for a past receipt, the date on the form must be the same or older than the date on the receipt. A lot of money has been lost by folks that did not know or understand this rule!

That is a rule I did not realize!

When receiving VAT from amazon.de what form does the payment come? My wife wants to order what I believe to be an astronomically priced baby carrier so the deal is, she'll get the VAT back if I order it.

On whatever payment you use to pay for the item. If we can even ever use a US credit card.

Ok - so I emailed amazon.de

As a stationed member of the NATO alliance, you are entitled to a refund of sales tax. But before we refund the tax, we need an appropriate form that you receive from your local troop office.

So after you ordered and already paid the VAT send us the original invoice and the form to:

Amazon.de
Umsatzsteuererstattung
Im Gewerbepark D 55
93059 Regensburg
Deutschland

After receiving your documents we will refund the VAT amount to the payment method which you have used to purchase your order.

The payment method is up to you. As I looked into your account I saw two direct debit cards. So you can use them if you want to, but also register an American credit card as long it is either AMEX, Visa or MasterCard.

Please note: If you have not purchased goods from Amazon.de directly, but from a third party seller, we kindly ask you to contact the seller regarding the tax refund. We provide only the trading platform. Whether you have received a product from a third party seller or from us will be stated on your invoice.

I hope this information was helpful.

Happy New Year and thank you for your service!

So now we just need to figure out why American credit cards don't work when amazon.de says it should.

Mine does. Just not for MP3's.

Great info here.. How do you actually use the VAT form at IKEA? The cashier didn't take it.. And what about for IKEA online orders? Thank you in advance.

You take your receipt and VAT form to the customer service desk and they give you a voucher for refund, which you then return to the cashier to get your refund... Pain in the neck by design...

True. When we did this, we did not wait in line at the cashier a second time. We were told by customer service to just go see the cashier with the voucher and to skip the line.

If a company does not understand the VAT form process, here is a handout in German.

Keep in mind, there is nothing to compel a merchant to take a VAT form. Having instructions in German is nice, but it doesn't mean the merchant has to cooperate.
