AHRN Going Away [updated]

Just got a notice in my email, AHRN will be gone as of 1 Jan 2014. Not sure what will be replacing it.

It is an absolutely useless site, anyway. Constantly out of date info.

Yeah...but a lot of people find their house on it. I think that is the whole reason they are letting it go and replacing it.

There has been a lot of debate as to the funding for this website and back in September/October it was officially pulled. Funding is cut as of 31 December. There was a plan from the company that runs AHRN to attempt to continue the site without the DoD funding but there is nothing concrete yet whether or not that will happen.

A lot of people did find homes there and its not a bad program if the owners and landlords can keep their listings current.

You mean a lot of people TRY to find their house on it. Every listing I looked at was already rented. It is kind of hard to keep a website up to date when relying on a landlord to give status updates.

Maybe Robert Mitchell can come up with a better mouse trap for people looking for housing?

You're the web guy.

True. I entertained the thought for about a second before realizing that it doesn't matter who is running a housing site, it still depends on the landlords to provide information. Without accurate info, the site is still poorly run. I wouldn't want to provide something that would not be as good as people deserve.

Then set up required fields, and don't let it post until reviewed. That's just what you need! More moderating!

There is more to it then moderating. When a house is rented, the only way to know is if the landlord reports the rental. It is always important for the landlord to list their rental, but not to take it off the market. This is one of the things that make AHRN so problematic to use.

I suppose I could make listings expire every 24 hours, and make the landlord responsible for extending the listing.

yes, that is all you could do... a short listing time. The issue is not fields that are left empty rather not updating the site when houses are rented.

I know my wife used the site fairly extensively. But she always asked if the house was rented. It's like using craigslist or RYS. You always have to ask if the item has sold because people don't update.

I wonder how many people are ready to jump on the AHRN bandwagon if it goes down? If I thought for a second that I could pull it off from stateside, I would do it. Just too many factors that require boots on the ground in Germany.

AHRN is how we have always got our houses! It was a great resource and to be honest it was pretty simple and easy to use. Whether it was stateside or OCONUS we had no problems finding houses during July/Aug PCS seasons using it. I would say we got some pretty awesome houses too! Sure there were houses we called on that were already rented, but its like craigslist and people jump on good things quick!

I suppose different people will have different experiences. Most people I know (small sample) did not have anything other than frustration with AHRN. I am glad you had a good experience, shoeler. Moving is made so much easier with a reliable resource to use.

Saw a house yesterday with a new sign that read "For Rent, see AHRN.com for details".

I hope this is all for the better.
