Know nothing!

Ram. will be our first base so I am extra nervous about everything, most about housing. Everywhere I go I get vague answers or partial answers to my questions. My husbands sponsor just said, "It will be answered at your mass in processing." While that is nice it doesn't ease my mind especially since we arrive in a week.

It will just be my husband and I, no kids or pets. How do I go about finding a place to live? Where should I even start? I feel like I am drowning here.

Thanks for any and all help.

First off, take a deep breath and relax. Germany is a great place to be. If you come in all nervous and crazy, you'll just make yourself even more crazy.

The military does have a way of complicating the crap out of things, but we are here to help you, and we are happy to do so.

Regarding your question about housing. You can start with www.ahrn.com. Sign up for an account there, and you can search for homes. However, you need to understand that homes don't last long once they are listed. If you see something that is within your allowance, make an appointment to see the place immediately, if not sooner. When you get to the house, don't hesitate because you think something better may come along. You have to sign the lease on the spot. If not, someone else will take the place that same day, or even in that same hour. It is not like in the U.S. where you have the luxury of asking the landlord to keep the place for you until you speak with your spouse. Some landlords will tell you that they will hold the house for you, but they don't.

Since you don't have kids, you don't have to worry about getting a house in any particular school district. If you know where you will be working, we can give you a list of villages that are nearby, to choose from.

Finding a house is not really all that bad as long as you pull the trigger as soon as you find something you like. The biggest mistake people make is seeing a house they like, but not signing a lease because they want to consult with their spouse, or think something else will come along. Just get the lease taken care of.

I have been to the ahrn website. When I go to try a search there for a place for Ramstein it says I need a special email to look which I find odd. I am also concerned about TLF for when we first get there too. How should I go about for the TLF?

Regarding TLF, call Hans. Tell Hans that this site sent you and he'll take super good care of you. His number is 0151-22326590. Ask anyone who has ever stayed in a TLF owned by Hans, and they will never shut up bragging about him. Simply put, you will not find a better TLF, or a better person to do business with.

Regarding AHRN, you must register using an email address that ends with a .mil OR dodea.edu domain. That is what the site says during registration. You or your husband should have a .mil address, right?

Thanks, I will look into Hans.

I registered with my regular email when looking for a place to stay in Mississippi while he was in technical school and didn't have a problem.

My husband does but I registered with my regular email when looking for a place to stay in Mississippi while he was in technical school and didn't have a problem.

Re-register using his email address. You'll need to access it to get the confirmation email they send you.

Hans is amazing, we have been talking for a couple of weeks now. We check into one of his places Sunday.

He is super freindly and helpful.

Welcome. Sorry your sponsor is being lazy :( The good news is since you don't have kids and no pets, it will be much easier to find a place to rent.

Let us know if you have any other questions. I'll be happy to help if I know the answer

When you get here you will be able to sign up for the Spouses Orientation. I HIGHLY recommend it. I've been a military spouse for over 16 years and the presentation done by Hagen at Airman and Family Readiness is by far the best one I've attended. Your husband will receive information during his inprocessing about this but when you arrive you can also contact Airman & Family Readiness and they can help you out. The Spouse Orientations are on Mondays and again, completely worth the day. Plus you'll get a chance to meet other newcomers and see that you're not alone in your housing, shopping, etc. quest.

We are here! We have been here for about 3 days now. Thanks to a wonderful guy in my husbands shop we are able to use our laptops. There was someone to pick us up!! The hotel we are in is nice, but I am looking forward to finding a house asap. Thank you for the information on the Spouses Orientation, I will look into it and knowing me I will go.
