I have to say this is our third time being stationed in Germany. The first time we were in Mannheim and 23 months ago we were in Stuttgart. I have never dealt with a housing office as frustrating as the one here!
We found a place in Winnweiller this weekend that we want to rent. The problem is that the house will not be ready until the week of the 10 July. It is a brand new house and housing has not been out to inspect it yet. The owner of the house told us he is having problems getting a hold of housing to come inspect the house. We stopped by housing today to talk to them because the Land Lord is wanting to start the paperwork for the contract. Housing told us we could not sign a contract until the house is inspected. Who knows when that will be. I asked them what happens if it exceeds are 30 days TLA and the guy said once 30 days is past we have to move out. He said waiting for a house to come open is not a reason to extend TLA. When we were in Stuttgart we spent 8 weeks TLA in a hotel and it was not a problem. The guy at housing here suggested we get a TLA apartment so our OHA will start. This makes no sense to me, especially since it could only be a week past our 30 days of TLA. It is not like I am wanting to hang out in a hotel room for the fun of it. :nono:
Sounds like a crappy position to be in. Perhaps you should speak to a supervisor. Or, take the landlord with you to housing so he can see for himself that you are trying to help him and yourself.
Did you at least give housing the name of the landlord? The landlord may be on a list where he may be under investigation for other legal issues pending.
Things are starting to come together. Housing will be out to inspect the house on the 5th of July and we will be able to sign the lease and move in by the 10th. That will put us just under 30 days in TLA.
Glad to hear everything worked out! Wish you the best on your move!
