Hello FNG here, House/internet questions

We are coming over from Graf and ITT'ing to Landstuhl. We have a nice place and currently get 32mb internet speed through Kabel Deutschland.

So:

1. Does the housing office offer anything different than what is on AHRN?
2. Can you get the immobilien cost reimbursed?
3. What areas would you suggest I look for houses in?
4. Which areas offer the fastest internet connection? Companies?
5.Best/cheapest resource to look for a house?
6. Is the LQA rate more/less/same for Landstuhl?

Thanks folks for your help and if anyone can get us a great lead on a place I will : fix your computer, repair your car (within my ability) or can do minor construction work. (yes, I am pimping my labor out!)

we get there around 1 June. Thanks and looking forward to watching an English movie in a theatre that has not come out on DVD already!

Edit to add: Great site by the way!

I'm sorry. I stopped reading at 32mb Internet connection. How about you stay in Graf and let me come live with you? I get 32mb here as well, just as long as you remove the 3 that comes before the 2. :nono:

Not that I have ever seen.

Can you get the immobilien cost reimbursed?

As a last resort, if you have already exhausted all other options, you can sometimes get approval to hire a realtor and be reimbursed. But, it is not something you can just do without at least trying to find a house on your own first. And, make sure you get the permission and reimbursement approval in writing.

What areas would you suggest I look for houses in?

The Landstuhl area is nice. If you want to be near Landstuhl/Ramstein, the areas are of course Ramstein, Mackenbach, Weilerbach, and a few other bachs that I don't know. I am sure someone else will chime in here.

Which areas offer the fastest internet connection? Companies?

I know you can get fast Internet in Weilerbach. Same with anyplace that offers cable. I suggest you call CommShop and ask them this question because they will be able to answer accurately. Ask for Matt or Sache. Tell them we sent you, please.

Best/cheapest resource to look for a house?

Best and cheapest are two different things. I'd look in the German paper on Saturday. Also, if you search this forum, you'll find a lot of info on this, including links to real estate sites.

Is the LQA rate more/less/same for Landstuhl?

I thought this had to do with your position, not where you live.

Great site by the way!

Thank you. We try.

And, I am serious. Can I come live with you and your 32mb connection?

What kind of computer work do you do?

Actually both. You can look up the rates for the different German localities here.

Wow, thanks. There is a difference. Now I see how the German Blitzkrieg continues over the Americans and their Uncle Sugar dollars!

Gee! You mean I am not the only person who thinks Germans are taking major advantage of Americans with the super extra high rental rates?

Thanks Joftaa, you have provided a ton of great info on this board. I am just an all around computer nerd.

By the way, I see rentals that charge you for a parking spot/garage, WTH?

If you don't pay will they just leave it for someone else?

And a long shot question, is there a English translation of the landlords/tenants rights?

The parking spot or garage is in the vicinity of apartment buildings, so people that do not have a car would not need a parking spot or garage. Might cost 25-50€ per month. If you don`t need that someone else from the apartment or neighborhood rents it.

Not always, Native. The house I rent has two garages. We are paying to use one, the landlord uses the other.

Real estate here is just not what we are used to in The U.S.

Balboa, I've attached a document from the legal folks on German Landlord-Tenant Law. You should be able to find out what your looking for in it.
