About the German Emissions Window Sticker Requirement

For those who wish to drive places to enjoy the country, there are some areas that require you to have an emission sticker on your windshield.

Many cities now require you to have a sticker on your windshield before entering. The decal is required if traveling into environmental green zones (inner city zones with high pollution levels) identified by the Umwelt sign.

You can pickup a free sticker at Kapaun Vehicle Registration. They should just offer them when you are registering. I don't know why they don't.

Here are what the signs look like:

This one displays the colors of the stickers that are permitted into the zone.

This one tells you that you need a sticker, and which sticker is needed. As long as you have one of the stickers on the sign, you are good to go.

Here is a map of the areas in Germany where this sticker is required.

I've been here a little over a month and got my vehicle registered and inspected recently after and I have never heard of this sticker. It would be pretty unfortunate if I decided to head to one of these required cities on the weekend and get fined for something I have never heard of.

Why does vehicle reg not tell you about this? If not them, the improcessing line should give you a heads up. For something this simple, I really would like to avoid dealing with fines.

They may not have told you, but we did.

Same here. Nobody told me, either. I found out through the grapevine when I was ready to travel. Kind of stupid that nobody bothers to tell you about it while you are standing right there where you get the sticker at Vehicle Reg.
