Internet Service Providers

Hello,

Does anyone have any suggestions on internet service? I live in the town Steinwenden just a couple of km northwest of the town of Ramstein. I've heard many people say they use TKS and T-mobile DSL service to mixed reviews (many folks have complained about slow and intermittent service) and they only off up to 6mbps. It appears that Vodafone provides DSL service in the area up to 16mbps. I've found other German providers on the internet (one provides up to 100mbps), but they don't mention if they offer service in the area. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

We currently have TKS, but thankfully we only had a one year contract with them... Our village is getting something called www.myquix.de which has service plans for Internet and phone... I know many villages south of Bann are scheduled to get Quix this year... I'm hoping ours is sooner than later... The Rep told me within the next month or so... In the meantime, our TKS is on par with dialup... It takes iTunes about 11 hours to download movies we rent... ugh...

Not to be a wise-ass or anything, but do you know of a link for this site that is readable by us non-German speakers? I'd love to see what they are offering, but I cannot understand anything on the site.

No, but they will answer emails in English... I don't speak any German either... I read about this first in my village's little newspaper and then googled it... thankfully google has the translate option (especially easy if you use chrome, then just click yes to translate). When the Rep came to town for an info meeting, he spoke awesome English... and helped me complete the forms... hope that helps a little...

My usual M.O. is to wait for others who early adopt new services. I would not want to be trapped with a new service that does not perform as they promise. But, in this case, I am already with a company that performs poorly, so how much worse could it get?

we are moving to Olsbrucken next week, and we need to get our bums in gear and get something set up for internet/tv/phone. I know we are going to be without internet for a while, given the history of most of the companies and the stories I have heard. I need to go to the comm shop, because I want anything but TKS..I have them for my cell phone, and I'm ok with that, and the 2 year contract....I am mad that they don't help me in English, though that is what the advertise..and tell me to call Tmobile, and then I have to say "spreichen zie English" and hope they put me through to someone who does. Oh and then I found on line how to get my voicemail directions in English..thank goodness for internet (slow or not).........I really want Kabel Deutschland, but it's not available in Olsbrucken...I'm hoping I can just go to telekom directly and get service....but I might just use the comm shop to avoid the language barrier..not sure yet. But we move in on the 6th, so I better get my bum in gear..cause I won't have anything for a while I'm sure.

My husband and I found a very nice home today in Steinwenden. We wondered if any of the people on this blog live there too, and if so if they could tell us who they use for Internet and phone service. Also, how fast their service is. It seems like based on this earlier thread that maybe this is one of the towns that has slower service. We will also check with Telecom about ths but if others could share their experiences it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

My suggestion would be to call Mat or Sache at Comm Shop. They will be able to tell you exactly what is available in your village. They'll even help you sign up for service. They do not charge for doing this, so you have nothing to lose!

06371-60753 - Please ask for Mat or Sache and please tell them you got their number from this site. We don't get anything for it, but Mat and Sache are very helpful, so I want them to know we are sending business their way.

Also, if you don't mind, after you speak with Mat or Sache, please come back to this page and tell us about your experience with them. We like to know that people are being treated properly when we make a recommendation.

100mb Download?!?! That's more like Fiber Optic vs Cable. Sure it's not 10mb?

That`s fast! You are lucky! Doesn`t it feel completely different with a new connection? ;)

...in east germany they had to wait for 10-15-20 years for a new Trabant car - if they where happy enough to get one...

It is nice to be able to download in minutes rather than hours! That is for sure!

Nope its 100mbs, we just got it installed its 56mbs and he said it should be at full speed in 4hrs.

8 years, 11 months ago

100mbs is about 12mbps. This is the average for DSL. That is what I have now.

100 megabits per second. A byte is made of 8 bits.
Therefore 100/8 = 12.5 Megabytes

It is fast, for sure.
