International Driving Licence / International Driving Permit (IDP)

Once you have gotten over the hurdle of getting your USAEUR driver's licence, it is an easy process to get one that will allow you to drive everywhere in Europe. It takes going to the licence place on Ramstein, getting a form, having a passport sized photo taken and $15. Go to the licence place in Kaiserslautern in the Centrum and you can get the licence.

The address etc for your GPS is on the form you get from Ramstein. Many military members and dependents forget that the one you take the test for only allows you to drive legally in Germany. So, if you travel by car over the border you can be stopped and arrested for driving without a proper licence. This has happened to a lot of people in the last year or so.

I need one for my Germany TDY. Does anyone know if AAA send one to me in the UK or do I have to get one here?

There is a link above to the AAA application. If you have an APO they can mail it to you. AAA does offer mail-in applications for the IDP as indicated above.

Are you a U.S. citizen? If so, you should not have a problem getting AAA to send you the IDP. I got my last one via mail.

The mailing instructions are a part of the application linked to above.

Thank you. I do have an APO. I will order one now.

FYI... If you were getting information from the base Drivers License Testing office on how/where to get an IDP, this came out today:

Effective immediately, the Ramstein Driver's Testing Station will only process applications for the International Driver's Permit (IDP) if a member is tasked with a short notice TDY/deployment and an IDP is required per the reporting instructions. Note: member must bring a copy of their orders to have their permit paperwork stamped. If you are not going TDY or deploying, individuals can find information about obtaining an IDP via the Internet. We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause.

I went to the license office today and now you have to go online to www.travel.state.gov to get your IDP. :-( BIG BUMMER!! It now takes 4-6 weeks to get it back because you mail it to the states. Wish I got one before the change- was hoping to drive to France next week with my mom. Oh well

You could always use AAA in The U.S. There is info about this above in this thread.

That's actually where you mail your application using that link above. The state dept directs you to their mailing address.

Are you a member of AAA? I am. I got my IDP from AAA itself.

Correct. You have to go to Kapaun first. They will give you what you need to take with you to get your IDP.

The information in THIS post is correct. There is nothing to be confused about.

You can also get it locally at Kreisverwaltung Kaiserslautern.
Lauterstraße 8
67657 Kaiserslautern
0631 7105-0

The price is €15.30. The IDP you get here will be good for up to three years. The expiration date of this IDP is based on your USAREUR driver license. If you have six months before your USAREUR license expires, you get an IDP that expires in six months.

You'll need the following when you go:

* Passport photo
* USAREUR driver license
* ID card
* Paperwork from where you're stationed (Kaupaun Vehicle Registration has it)
