Get your USAREUR Driver License ASAP!

If you are looking for the online study guide and practice test, look here.
If you are looking for the online study guide and practice test discussion, look here.

-----------------------------------

If you are going to drive in Germany, you must have a USAREUR driver license. There is no exception to this rule.

If you have not already heard the horror stories about taking the test to get your license, do yourself a favor and ignore anyone who tells you how difficult it is to pass the test. You may download the study guide, study for the test, and take practice tests at USAREURPracticeTest.com.

Both my wife and I passed the test the first time. All it takes is a little effort on your part.

For more information on the driving test, picking up your POV, and more, look here. Something that I noticed missing from this information is that if you have tinted windows, even clear tint, you may NOT have the tint film on your windshield or front driver/passenger windows. You will not pass inspection if your have tint on these windows, and that means you cannot get your license plates.

Plan ahead!

You need to make an appointment to get your driver license. When I called for my appointment, I was ready to take the test. I was prepared. I was psyched. I was ready to drive! Unfortunately, the driver license administrator had a different idea. The soonest appointment available for me to take the test was two weeks later. This was a major bummer!

I suggest you call and make your appointment at least 10 days prior to being ready to take the test. You should be able to study the material and take the practice test and be very prepared to pass the test by the time your appointment comes around.

Here is the info on who to call. I highly suggest that while you are on the phone making your appointment, that you ask what they require you to bring with you. If I recall correctly, I needed a copy of my sponsor's orders, my stateside driver license, and a check for $10. Verify what you will need with you, otherwise you might not get to take your test and you'll have to wait until the next available appointment.

Remember, study and know the signs, and get 100% on the practice test. I can't guarantee this will work for you, but it worked for both myself and my wife. We both passed the first time.

The text in the following box is from HERE

Drivers MUST have a U.S. Army Europe license to drive in Germany, no exception. An international driver's license is not acceptable, nor can you legally drive a rental car while you wait for your vehicle to arrive without one.
Current United States Army Europe (USAREUR) rules require all members of the US Forces, including civilian employees and family members, to have a USAREUR driver's license to operate ANY vehicle overseas. This license may be obtained ONLY from a USAREUR driver testing facility--not in the States. Drivers should get an international driving permit before driving a vehicle outside of Germany (see AE PAM 290-34), however, driving while pending a USAREUR certificate of license is possible only for sponsors who meet applicable regulation-specified criteria and, even then, is discretionary with the ASG Commander (see AER 190-1, para 2-1b). An International driver's license is not acceptable for U.S. sponsored individuals overseas in lieu of a USAREUR driver's license. This requirement applies to either a U.S. Forces-registered vehicle or a vehicle bearing German license plates (e.g., rental vehicles). Be prepared to take the driver's test soon after your arrival overseas. Sponsors can provide a copy of the USAREUR driver's handbook so that individuals may study for this driver's test.

Individuals who will be stationed in Germany should review the Driver's Handbook and Examination Manual for Germany, USAREUR Pamphlet 190-34.

A written test is required for individuals possessing a valid driver's license from any state. BE ADVISED however -- it is challenging. Studying is a must to successfully pass the test. The test is a combination of road sign recognition and multiple-choice questions on a variety of driving and safety topics.

Individuals must continue to hold a valid state driver's license and a military driver's license or a German driver's license (former German assignments only) in addition to the USAREUR license. Anyone planning to drive in Europe must obtain a valid state driver's license before leaving the United States.

Since posts in each country administer their own exams, individuals may contact their sponsor for information on obtaining a driver's license and available study aids.
The Driving in Germany videos are also at USAREURpracticeTest.com.

There is also information presented before the test about drinking alcohol and how long you need to wait to drive. Know that info. You will be tested on it.

On the day of testing you must have the following items:

a) Valid ID Card.
b) Valid stateside driver's license.
c) Sponsor's local unit, unit address, and phone number.
d) Personal mailing address.
e) $10 check or money order.
f) Corrective lenses if needed.
g) The Driver's Study Booklet must be returned on testing day.

If you arrive for your test without any/some of the above, you will be rescheduled to test on another day.

MOTORCYCLES
If you have a valid stateside license with a motorcycle endorsement, you will need to pass a 30 question written test along with a nine exercise proficiency test before being able to legally drive any motorcycle in Germany. If you fail either portion of the test, or do not have a stateside motorcycle endorsement, you can take the required course on the economy at your own expense.

Motorcycle license testing is offered February through October only. Each applicant is required to bring:

a) Valid stateside license with motorcycle endorsement.
b) Valid USAREUR POV license.
c) Motorcycle and protective headgear.
d) $10 check or money order.

I have been told by many that even with the online testing, it is much faster to be prepared in advance. I have not seen the online test, so I can't vouch for accuracy, but I have also been told that most of the online material can be skipped if you're prepared in advance from our practice test site.

The Army website is promoting USAREURpracticeTest.com on their site as a way to prepare, as well as the Air Force.

If you're not AD, you can't test online.

The Army has a 3 hour orientation class that you must take before you can take the test. This online class is on JKO and if you take it you don't have to take the class. You'll still have to test and all that other stuff...

The orientation isn't the point. I had to do that, too. The boring videos and the short lecture. But, the testing part is much faster if you're prepared ahead of time.

It was my point. You can either do it online or face-to-face. I rather do it before hand as it's one less thing to do.

So I got this in my email. Can I take the drivers test online? And just show up when I get there to get my license?

See below for email

The Army has posted the USAREUR online driver's test at
Make sure you create a JKO login,

https://jkodirect.jten.mil/Atlas2/faces/page/login/Login.seam

Once you log in, go to course catalog and type in Course Number USA-007.
It's the US Forces Driver's Training Program for Europe. Course.

The exam is course USA-007-B US Forces Driver's Training Program for Europe
- Final Course Exam. Click enroll then confirm that yes, you want to enroll.
Once enrolled, the course should show up under the "My Training' Tab. Launch
then complete. It takes a minute for it to show up under the training tab.

It can take 2 business days for the results to post so that Army orientation
personnel can view your results. If there is a possibility to print a
certificate, I would do so in the hopes that it prevents delays.
