We just went to Heidelberg for the 1st time yesterday, and I thought I would share a bit about it.
For easy parking and a good location for "Old Town/Altstadt" park here :
Zwingerstraße 2 69115 Heidelberg
It is a garage and directly connected to the tram that goes up to the castle and further up the mountain(we did not go all the way up due to time constraints and heavy fog). The tram ticket is 5 Euro per person to the castle and also gains you access to the castle grounds. I am not sure if it is round trip as we walked down the stairs into the Christmas Market in "Old Town/Altstadt".
Definitely take advantage of the English speaking tour. You go through parts of the castle that are inaccessible without the tour. Price for adults is 4 Euro per person.
We enjoyed the Christmas Market as well. Being as it was a Friday night I expected to be mauled, but it wasn't bad at all. The big differences in this market were the presence of an ice skating rink, and the opportunity for a picture with Santa. The food and shopping seemed the same as other markets. There is also a Christmas Market on the castle grounds, but it was still being set up.
We ate at:

The food and atmosphere were a perfect fit for our evening. We ended up sitting at a table with others, but it only enhanced the experience. To eat we had:
Sticks of different hard cheeses with fruity mustard and baguette
(good cheese, but nothing mind blowing. the presentation was cool)
Homemade large ravioli Suabian style with bacon and onion sauce, salads and potato salad
(this was delicious. lots of food for the price, and a good sampling of salads)
Homemade large ravioli with game stuffing, sauteed mushrooms and cream sauce
(this was decent. if you are a mushroom lover this would be good for you)
Rich German sauerkraut platter with spicy sausage, crispy pork and dumpling
(also delicious. there was also a pork patty that was not listed on the menu(added bonus). this is a dish for true carnivores.)
