Oldtimer Vehicle Registration Replies: 0
Views: 5
When I eventually move here, I am also going to be shipping a car over. I will be bringing my 1971 Super Beetle. It runs very well, doesn't leak, and, for the most part, is all original. I know that you have to have a car that is 'original' in order to qualify. I've done some research on the Oldtimer registration online but haven't been able to find all the answers I need.

1. I'm planning to put a new car stereo in it. Will this disqualify it under the 'original rule' or does that apply for drivetrain/body parts only?

2. I'm also thinking of getting the vehicle entirely repainted and having any dent s removed. With that, I'm also planning to get the undercarriage coated to prevent rusting. Will this disqualify it?

3. Is the process of inspecting and registering this car any different than a newer car? What are some of the associated costs that I should expect to pay?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

What I am to expect from my sponsor? I have absolutely no experience in this arena. Basically, what should I do myself and what should I expect from the sponsor?
This site is so informative. I know I have asked a lot of questions, but everyone is a such a wealth of information and "inquiring minds must know!"

Renew Your Stateside Driver License Before Heading to Germany Replies: 0
Views: 40
When you get to Germany you will need to get a USAREUR driver license. To get this license you must have a valid stateside license. As long as you renew your USAREUR license before it expires, you will not need a valid stateside license.

Before you leave the U.S., renew your driver license and get an expiration date as far into the future as you can. The reason for this is because if you want to drive outside of Germany, your USAREUR license is useless. You'll need your IDP to drive outside of Germany.

If you get your IDP in the U.S., your stateside license needs to be valid and accompany your IDP. If you get your IDP in Germany from a German source, it will be tied to your USAREUR driver license, therefore your stateside license is not required to accompany it.

So, the only reason for having a valid stateside driver license is to drive outside of Germany using an IDP obtained in the U.S.

Once you return stateside, you'll need the valid stateside license again, but how you go about doing so varies from state to state. I know that for Florida, if you are accident and ticket free, you can renew by mail, so it is easy to keep the Florida driver license valid. You'd have to check with your state to see their requirements.

By the way, you can start studying for your USAREUR driver license now at www.USAREURpracticeTest.com.

  • The library
  • The sports bar in the KMCC
  • Pizza Gallerie in Ramstein Community Center
  • The Enlisted Club near the entrance to JR Rockers there is a downstairs area with chairs, and tables, with free WiFi.

Most of the WiFi uses the password: 5*service

++ If you know of any other places, please post. I'd like to compile a list of places on base that anyone with an ID card can get to.

How can I avoid google.de coming up instead of google.com? I use Google Chrome as my primary browser. I used to be able to go to .com, but now even if I go to .com it still goes to .de.

FYI I know this is probably a stupid question.

Instead of paying to send text messages to cell phones in Germany, you can use this website to send SMS/MMS for free.

Since this is a web based service, you can use it from anywhere you have an Internet connection, including your smart phone, or home computer.

The service is available for more than 50 (fifty) countries. You can also send MMS, too.
